American Canyon Measure P proposes a one-cent sales-tax increase for city services

Source: City of American Canyon, American Canyon Measure P information and ballot language · checked Oct 16, 2026

American Canyon voters will decide November 3, 2026 whether to add one percentage point to the city's sales-tax rate. Measure P would raise the rate from 7.75% to 8.75%, according to the city's measure page.

What the money would fund

The city estimates about $3.7 million a year for general city services. The ballot language names emergency response, police patrols, wildfire-risk work, parks and recreation among possible uses.

The measure would require audits and spending disclosures, with funds controlled locally. It would continue until ended by voters.

What changes for a purchase

On a $100 taxable purchase, the proposed increase would add $1 in tax. The city says it would apply to purchases already subject to sales tax, rather than creating new taxable categories.

Why the city proposed it

The city says its fiscal year 2026–27 budget is balanced but forecasts a General Fund shortfall in later years. That is a projection, not a statement that the current budget is already in deficit.

Before voting

Read the official ballot language, ordinance and financial information through the city's Elections Central page. Measure P remains a proposal until voters decide; this article does not report an election result.

Summary

City page says council placed a proposed 1% transactions/use tax on the November 3 ballot, taking total rate from 7.75% to 8.75%, estimated $3.7m annually for general services, local control, audits/disclosures, until ended by voters. FY2026/27 is balanced; later deficits are projected. $1 per $100 is arithmetic, not an additional source claim.
