Napa Valley Unified School District (NVUSD), which includes American Canyon's public high and middle schools, will ask families for health insurance or Medi-Cal details. It wants them before a student receives certain school wellness services. The district announced the change on July 31, 2026. It says the services stay free.
Why
New state rules let NVUSD bill private insurance and Medi-Cal for part of the cost of eligible services, such as campus Wellness Centers and mental health support. The district says the money goes back into those programs.
What the district says
No out-of-pocket costs, co-payments or deductibles.
Sharing insurance details will not affect a family's premiums, policy limits or outside care.
Health information is kept private and used only for reimbursement.
What we don't know
The Napa County Office of Education says services are available regardless of insurance. NVUSD does not say what happens if a family has coverage but declines to share it. Families with questions can contact their school principal.
Dated source evidence; the project may have changed since then. An approval does not establish construction or an opening.
Summary
July 31, 2026 announcement: starting 2026-27, families asked for health insurance or Medi-Cal information before specific wellness services so the district can bill eligible claims under CYBHI; no out-of-pocket costs; no impact on coverage; confidentiality; reimbursements return to schools.
