The Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA), which runs San Francisco Bay Ferry, plans to rebuild the Vallejo Ferry Terminal's gangway and boarding float about 200 feet farther out into the river, away from the part of the basin where the most silt collects. WETA says silt now forces dredging every 1.5 to 2 years at nearly $2 million each time, and has led it to cancel some sailings at low tide. The new float would berth two ferries at once, and dredging is expected to drop to about once every 20 years, which WETA estimates will save about $21 million over two decades. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife approved a streambed agreement for the work on August 18, 2026; the Bay Conservation and Development Commission lists WETA's permit request as under review. WETA's project page says construction is scheduled for 2027 and puts the cost at $16 million, with about $13 million committed. Ferry service would continue from a temporary float during construction, with in-water work limited to August through November. A construction start date has not been announced.
